Urban Last-Mile Deliveries: Challenges and Future Opportunities
On Monday, 30 June 2025, iLink and NERO co-organised the workshop “Urban Last-Mile Deliveries – Challenges and Future Opportunities” in Athens, Greece, as part of the Navigating the Future of Traffic Management symposium. The session brought together key stakeholders to examine the pressing challenges and emerging opportunities in last-mile logistics within urban environments.
Moderated by Panagiotis Zikos, CEO of iLink, the session explored the complexity and strategic importance of the last mile, drawing on insights from research, policy, business, and the professional driving community.
A key theme was the critical role of data in shaping effective last-mile logistics policies. Participants emphasised that logistics stakeholders hold operational data that can directly support public authorities in designing targeted strategies and procedures. This led to a rich discussion around data security and the need for trusted frameworks that ensure safe, transparent, and purpose-driven data exchange between private actors and regulatory bodies.
The conversation made clear that without robust data-sharing mechanisms, underpinned by security, privacy, and mutual benefit, it will be challenging to enable the smart, sustainable, and citizen-centric systems we aim for.
Speakers included:
- Ms. Despoina Paliarouta, General Secretary of Transport, Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport
- Dr. Georgia Ayfantopoulou, President, ITS-Hellas & Research Director, CERTH-HIT
- Konstantinos Chaniotis, Founder & CEO, Telenavis
- Iro Doumani, General Manager, Hellenic Federation of Road Transport
- George Stasinos, President, Technical Chamber of Greece
